Prop Making & Photography
The brief was to create a visual representation of an element of our dissertation, creating a special study which bridges the gap between theory and practice. With my dissertation covering the relationship of revisionist narratives in history I curated/created and photographed historical based props in order to show the skewing of fact and fiction in the history we know to be 'true'.
The Crafting Process
After being inspired by the great Annie Atkins, I could see props working really well to communicate the core of my dissertation, and that's where the curation aspect of the project came about. Scouring the Huddersfield Open Market I found appropriately time fitting content.
Next came the creative process of studying the artifacts and then recreating them > duplicating them for coffee tests, in order to get the right aged look which would make them blend in with the collected contents > scribing parts of my dissertation (with the help of Mirsab Janjua) > Working out how to fake a type writer (I wanted to use a real one, but due to COVID-19 I was unable to source one in time) using OverType, a printer and carefully aligned cut coffee dyed paper
Below are images I took to document the process.
